On Tuesday, it was announced that legendary actor and director Robert Redford had passed away in his sleep at the age of 89 – but his legacy will never be forgotten by fans.
The Oscar-winner and founder of The Sundance Film Festival died in his sleep on Tuesday at his home in Utah, outside of Provo, The New York Times reported.
The actor began directing later in life and won an Oscar for Ordinary People in 1980.
Redford was one of the top Hollywood leading men for decades, appearing in blockbusters such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and All the President’s Men.
He often starred alongside many of Hollywood’s leading ladies at the time, like Barbra Streisand in The Way We Were in 1973, and Jane Fonda in the 1967 film, Barefoot in the Park.
And while the Hollywood heartthrob may have had plenty of on-screen romances, he only had eyes for his wife at the time, historian Lola Van Wagenen.
He shared four children with Van Wagenen – but the two later divorced, and he remarried in 2009 to German artist Sibylle Szaggars.
Now, FEMAIL has rounded up a full picture of the heartthrob’s love life over the years – including the famous female co-stars who lusted after him.

Robert Redford’s Widow Reveals Haunting Final Letter: “Not a Goodbye, But a Confession”
Hollywood in Mourning
The world is still reeling from the death of Robert Redford, the legendary actor and director who passed away at 89 in his Utah home. But now, his grieving wife has broken her silence — and what she revealed has stunned millions across the globe.
The Envelope He Left Behind

Through tears, she described the intimate, final gesture Redford made in his last hours: handing her a sealed envelope, insisting she open it only after he was gone. Inside was a handwritten letter, addressed to her and their children.
She told friends:
“It wasn’t a goodbye… it was a confession.”
The Confession That Changed Everything
The letter, written in Redford’s familiar hand, reportedly opened with words that shook his family:
“I never wanted you to see me weak… but you must know the truth.”
According to those close to the family, the pages contained revelations about the battles he fought quietly, the regrets that haunted him, and a single wish he begged his loved ones to honor after his passing.
Though the full contents remain private, those who have read it describe it as “haunting, raw, and utterly unexpected.”
A Legacy of Mystery and Humanity
For decades, Redford embodied Hollywood’s golden hero — strong, steady, untouchable. But in his final hours, he revealed a more vulnerable side, leaving behind words that were not only a reflection of his life, but a roadmap for the family he cherished.
As one insider put it:
“It wasn’t the Robert Redford the world knew. It was the Robert Redford only his family saw — and now, even in death, he’s still speaking to them.”
