Speaking to Tom Grennan, 32 year old Roman said: “It’s scary. Friday night I’d just finished work and looked at my phone, and dad sent a picture of his hand with all fingers heavily strapped up.

“And all he writes underneath in the family WhatsApp group is ‘yep… chainsaw.'”

Roman continued: “I was texting him saying ‘what?!’ but got no reply, and then Harley my sister is like ‘what’s happened?’ but again, no reply.

“So he said ‘Oh there was a bit of the branch that we wanted chopping down so I went and got a chainsaw.”

Roman added: “He’s 65. He’s got more than enough dough. Get a professional in, you can’t be doing that.”

He continued: “Do you know what he said? ‘I picked it up from the blade and it didn’t have the sheath on it’. He said it switched on…he’s picked it up and it’s kicked into gear.”

Roman said Martin was “lucky not to lose his hand”, adding: “I know a mate who lost a finger through that.”

Roman went on to say Martin “screamed” and ran into wife Shirlie with blood pouring everywhere. It was then the Spandau singer went to hospital for a tetanus shot.

Singer Tom then joked Martin’s wife Shirlie wouldn’t be impressed if the injury meant he could no longer play guitar.

Martin shares a close bond with his son and daughter Harley, 35, and recently opened up to the Mirror about how surreal it is being a parent of grown-up children.

He said: “My kids are now in their thirties, but I’ve got footage of them taking their first steps, and it’s mind-boggling when I watch it back.

“You miss them so much when they grow up. It’s weird, when I watch old videos of Roman I can even remember the way he would smell of milk as a baby. Both of my parents have passed on now, but I’ve got memories of them and it feels like I can still smell them when I see old clips. It’s priceless.

“We had a load of old tapes of the kids, and a few Christmases ago, Shirlie bought me a camera that can play them all. I hadn’t seen these tapes in years, so I was watching them back through this little lens on the camera with my eye up against it, crying my eyes out!”
