During the Dec. 17 episode of the New Heights podcast, Kelce reflected on the late hit that sent his quarterback to the turf during the Dec. 14 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, ending both Mahomes’ season and the Chiefs’ playoff hopes.

“Obviously, we lost our quarterback, man,” Kelce said.
“Patty Mahomes — our guy, our brother, our fearless leader, the face of this franchise — to an ACL.”

“It Was Almost Like It Wasn’t Real”

Mahomes went down clutching his left knee in the final minutes of the game. An MRI later confirmed the worst: a torn ACL, followed quickly by surgery — and reports that his LCL also required repair.

For Kelce, the moment still feels surreal.

“On a freakish play to see No. 15 go down like that… it f—— sucked,” he admitted.
“It was almost like it wasn’t real. And s— just sucks, man.”

The pain in his voice was unmistakable — not just for the injury, but for the man behind the helmet.

“For a guy that puts his body on the line week in, week out… who makes this football world better by how hard he works — it just sucks.”

Kelce confirmed that Mahomes’ surgery “went well” — and left no doubt about what comes next.

“He’s a warrior,” Kelce said firmly.
“This guy has battled through everything. That’s how he’s wired. He’s fearless — and he’s going to make sure he comes back stronger than ever.”

Still, the road ahead is long.

Orthopedic experts say recovery from an ACL tear typically takes 9 to 12 months, with weeks on crutches and months of rehab before full contact is even possible. As one specialist put it plainly:

“Nobody’s superhuman.”
