Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been on a four-day tour of Australia where the Duke of Sussex repeated a word that became a point of contention back in 2021

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have now concluded their four-day tour of Australia where one royal expert believes she caught a telling moment from a word Prince Harry repeated.

Harry and Meghan Markle spent the final day of their trip honouring the Bondi Beach terror attack heroes. They met with surf club members who helped when a gunman took the lives of 15 people at the Hanukkah event in December.

But it was in Melbourne where the deputy royal editor of The Telegraph, Victoria Ward, noticed just how much Harry wanted to serve people.

In 2021, the Queen revealed that Harry and his wife would not “continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service”.

However, the Sussexes replied with: “We can all live a life of service. Service is universal.”

And this word was repeated in Australia, according to Victoria who noted: “It was telling, I thought, that the word came up again yesterday.

“During a short Q&A on stage at the InterEdge leadership summit, the Duke described how, following the death of his mother, he decided he did not want this job.”

Harry told the summit: “I don’t want this role, wherever this is headed. I don’t like it. It killed my mum. I was very much against it.”

However, Victoria said that he eventually “realised that he could use his platform to try to make a difference in the world.”

Harry said: “What would my mum want me to do? That really changed my perspective.

“I realised well, actually, helping other people is also helping me. Service, for me, is a cure in itself.”

As well as Sydney and Melbourne, the couple also visited Canberra during their tour.

It was their first visit to Australia since announcing in 2018 that the country would host the Invictus Games.

In Melbourne, the Duchess told people to be “strong” in light of social media bullying. This was during a talk with students at Swinburne University of Technology about mental health and social media.

She said: “And I can speak to that really personally, which is why I like to listen, because it rings true for me in a very real way.

“For now, 10 years, every day for 10 years, I have been bullied and attacked. And I was the most trolled person in the entire world.”

She added: “I’m still here.”

After meeting first responders from Bondi Surf Bathers’ Life Saving club meanwhile, Elon Zizer, 40, who survived the shooting, said: “It’s very special. It makes us feel heard.”

Jessica Chapnik Kahn shielded her daughter, five, during the horrifying scenes, and she said it was an honour to meet them.

On their final night in Sydney, Harry and Meghan went to a rugby match between the New South Wales Waratahs and Moana Pasifika.

They were invited by CEO of Australian Rugby Union, Phil Waugh, who sat next to them, and it was Harry’s first rugby match in Sydney since he watched England lift the World Cup in 2003.
