Laurence Louie has made his way to the final three chefs on “Top Chef” Season 23 on Bravo. The Boston-born chef and restaurant owner has been impressing the judges throughout the reality TV cooking competition. He likes to blend Chinese-American flavors, technical skill, and creative storytelling through food. Before we crown the winner of “Top Chef” 2026 this weekend, here are five fast facts about the chef behind one of the season’s strongest performances. Check them out below in our “Top Chef” spoilers.
1. Laurence Didn’t Get Started in the Kitchen
While many professional chefs get their start in the kitchen, Laurence didn’t immediately pursue cooking as a career.
He earned a master’s degree in Asian-American Studies. Laurence then worked as a community organizer in Boston’s Chinatown.
It wasn’t until later that he decided to follow his passion for food full-time. This unconventional path helped shape the perspective and cultural influences that now define his cooking style.
2. A Trip to China Changed His Life
After an extended stay in China, Laurence’s culinary career started to take shape.
While in China, Laurence studied Mandarin, joined a university basketball team, and apprenticed at a hand-pulled noodle shop. All of this experience helped deepen his connection to his Chinese heritage. It also helped inspire him to pursue cooking professionally when he returned to the United States.
3. He’s the Chef-Owner of Rubato

4. Laurence Won Another Reality TV Cooking Competition
This isn’t Laurence’s first taste of television. In 2024, Laurence won an episode of “Chopped.”
Laurence’s ability to think quickly under pressure has been evident throughout “Top Chef” Season 23. This season, he has consistently delivered strong dishes in both Quickfire and Elimination Challenges.
It looks like Laurence has also competed on “Beat Bobby Flay,” having recently shared his victory on social media.
5. One of This Season’s Most Dominant Competitors
As we enter the “Top Chef” Season 23 finale this weekend, we look back at Laurence’s time on the show. He won multiple Quickfire Challenges, several Elimination Challenges, and over $20,000 in prize money.
These consistent performances have made him a fan favorite and one of the chefs to beat in the “Top Chef” finale. Laurence has definitely got, shall we say, a “winner’s edit” this season. He seems like he’s a favorite to win, but then we consider Rhoda coming back from “Last Chance Kitchen” as the ultimate redemption story.
