Emmerdale’s Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) has been struggling in the aftermath of his surgery to come to terms with how his body has changed.

He’d originally wanted to cancel the prostatectomy for fear of the side effects, like loss of the ability to have sex, and lack of control over his bladder.

His worst fears were realised when he woke up from the op to find a catheter in place, believing it to be permanent. It was hard going for him to get his head around the fact that it was just temporary.

But then when it was eventually removed, he discovered another side effect that he now has an urgency to pee that is so bad, it saw him end up in a prison cell when he was caught urinating in public. What was worse, he’d accidentally wet himself too.

He then developed a fear of being too far from a toilet, which saw him too anxious to go back to work.

Just as he starts to get used to the new normal, he’ll be hit with more bad news.

It’s Kyle’s (Huey Quinn) swearing in at the cadets, and he’s chuffed when Cain asks to come along. Kyle proudly takes his Army Cadet oath knowing that his beloved dad is watching, but when he looks over at him, he’s not there.

Has Cain really bailed on him? Yes, but not intentionally. There was an urgent call from nature he had to take.

Cain legs it to the Woolpack loos and is horrified to find a wet patch on his trousers. He’s utterly embarrassed and hides, but when Charles enters the gents, he sees the situation and comes back with a clean pair of trousers. Charles and Bob try to offer kind words to Cain and assure him it goes no further, and in a monumental moment, Cain agrees to accept help.

With their support, he heads back to the ceremony and shamefully apologises to Kyle, who reassures his dad all is ok. Cain is left feeling a shell of himself, wondering when this will all end.

Not yet, that’s for sure.

He has a check in at the hospital and there’s more bad news to come – Ms Rhodes crushes both his and Moira’s spirits when she reveals that the cancer has spread.

This world-stopping news sends Cain into in another spiral. He needs more treatment but will have to wait to allow his body time to recover.

What this also means is that the radiotherapy that’s needed will likely make the side effects permanent.

They decide not to tell the boys, but with Cain’s reticence to get the surgery in the first place, will he try to back out of this treatment too?
