Amidst the dazzling lights of the Academy of Country Music Awards in Las Vegas, Cody Johnson not only took to the stage as a country music star at the peak of his career—he transformed the evening into a quintessential American moment, filled with emotion and patriotism that drew a standing ovation from the audience.

Just minutes after being announced as Male Artist of the Year, Cody Johnson appeared on the big stage to perform “Travelin’ Soldier”—a hit song that had been associated with The Chicks since 2002. Standing before a giant American flag that covered the screen behind him, the singer sang while war footage and images of soldiers flashed continuously, creating one of the most emotionally charged performances of the night.
The audience quickly sang along to the familiar lyrics, before the entire auditorium rose to their feet as Johnson finished the song. For many who watched this year’s ACM Awards, it wasn’t just a musical performance—it was a tribute to American soldiers and their families.
Johnson is known for his public support of the U.S. military. For years, he’s regularly sung “Travelin’ Soldier” at concerts, and this cover has become one of the most requested songs. In November 2025, just before Veterans Day, Cody officially released a studio version of the song, bringing it back into the spotlight on country music platforms.
But behind that moment of pride lies a tumultuous year for the 38-year-old singer.

In late October last year, Cody Johnson and his wife Brandi welcomed their first child, Jaycee Daniel—the couple’s third child. However, this family joy came just weeks after Johnson suffered a serious injury: a ruptured eardrum while on tour.
The injury forced him to undergo surgery and cancel the remainder of his 2025 tour. At the time, Cody admitted that the recovery process was depressing because he couldn’t sing for weeks.
“The recovery process will take weeks and I can’t sing during this time,” he wrote on Instagram. “Without the surgery, I could have been out for months.”

After the surgery, Johnson appeared with a bandage on his left ear in a video update sent to fans, stating that the surgery “went better than expected.”
In February of this year, Cody officially returned to the stage with the Leather Deluxe Tour in Kentucky, marking the beginning of what is considered the most explosive comeback of his career. Since then, Johnson has consistently appeared at major events, from Stagecoach to a sold-out concert with George Strait at Clemson Stadium.
And the 2026 ACM Awards became his biggest milestone to date.
Besides winning Male Artist of the Year, Cody Johnson beat out a host of big names like Luke Combs, Morgan Wallen, Chris Stapleton, and Jelly Roll to win the biggest award of the night: Entertainer of the Year—his first win in this category.

But what surprised the audience was his acceptance speech.
Instead of talking about himself, Johnson dedicated almost the entire moment of his victory to paying tribute to Luke Combs—his direct competitor in the same category.
“There’s another nominee tonight whose life I’ve personally witnessed being dedicated to country music,” Cody said on stage.
He recounted the moment they toured in Australia in 2023, when Luke Combs’ wife gave birth to their son while the singer was performing on the other side of the globe.
“I saw the pain on his face because he couldn’t be with his family at that moment. But the very next night, he still stepped onto the stage and gave his all for country music in front of thousands of fans.”
Johnson then concluded his speech with a message that moved many fans:
“Tonight, I want to dedicate my first ever Entertainer of the Year award to my brother Luke Combs. I love you.”
That moment quickly went viral on social media, with many calling it “the most heartfelt speech of the 2026 ACM Awards.”
Meanwhile, Cody Johnson continues to maintain his incredible form. His latest album, Leather, released in 2023, solidified his position in the country music scene, and the song “The Fall” reached Top 4 on the Billboard Country Airplay and Top 7 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs.
The singer is also preparing to release his 10th studio album, titled Banks of the Trinity, on June 26th.
From an artist who had to leave the stage due to injury, Cody Johnson has not only returned stronger than ever—but has also become a new icon of American country music: edgy, genuine, and always putting family, patriotism, and music first.
