‘HE WAS FOUND ALONE… THEY WERE FOUND TOGETHER.’ The mystery surrounding the Maldives cave disaster has taken a haunting new turn after investigators revealed diving instructor Gianluca Benedetti died separated from the four tourists he was guiding through the deadly underwater labyrinth. His body was recovered near the cave entrance — but the others were discovered days later deep in the darkness, leaving experts struggling to explain what happened between those two locations.

The mystery surrounding the deaths of five experienced Italian divers in the Maldives has deepened dramatically after rescuers revealed a chilling discovery deep inside a notorious underwater cave system — and investigators now fear the group may have become trapped in darkness hundreds of feet beneath the surface.

Bodies of 4 missing Italians found in a Maldives sea cave

In what has become the deadliest diving disaster in Maldivian history, the bodies of four members of the expedition were finally located deep inside the third chamber of the infamous Thinwana Kandu cave, also known as Shark Cave, after an extraordinary search operation involving elite cave-diving specialists flown in from Finland.

The revelation came days after diving instructor Gianluca Benedetti, 44, was recovered separately near the cave’s entrance, raising fresh questions about what unfolded during the expedition’s final moments. Officials confirmed that the remaining four victims — respected marine ecology professor Monica Montefalcone, her 22-year-old daughter Giorgia Sommacal, marine biologist Federico Gualtieri and researcher Muriel Oddenino — were discovered huddled together at the far end of a tunnel buried deep within the cave’s third and largest chamber.

Government spokesman Ahmed Shaam described the discovery as exactly where authorities had feared the divers might be.

“As previously thought, the four bodies were found well inside the cave, deep into the third segment,” he said.

The cave itself is considered so dangerous that even highly trained divers rarely attempt to enter its deepest sections. Connected by narrow passageways, the chambers are known for poor visibility, extreme depths and maze-like tunnels capable of disorienting even experienced explorers.

Now investigators are scrambling to determine what turned a routine scientific expedition into a catastrophe.

One leading theory suggests the group became hopelessly lost inside the underwater labyrinth after visibility deteriorated. Experts believe panic may have spread as sediment clouds filled the cave, making it impossible to locate the exit. Another possibility is that one diver became trapped, triggering a desperate rescue attempt by the others. Authorities are also examining whether oxygen toxicity — a potentially deadly condition caused by breathing gas mixtures at extreme depths — may have played a role.

Adding to the mystery, the dive reportedly reached depths of more than 160 feet — far beyond the Maldives’ standard recreational diving limit of 98 feet. Officials are also investigating claims that the group entered the cave without a local guide and whether mandatory safety ropes used for cave navigation were deployed.

The recovery mission itself turned tragic when Maldivian military diver Sergeant Major Mohammed Mahudhee died from decompression sickness after helping search for the missing Italians, highlighting the extraordinary dangers rescuers faced.

Meanwhile, grief-stricken relatives continue searching for answers.

Monica Montefalcone’s husband Carlo Sommacal revealed that a GoPro camera carried during the dive could hold the key to solving the mystery.

“My wife was among the best divers on earth,” he said. “She would never have put our daughter or anyone else in danger. Something must have happened down there.”

As investigators comb through evidence and await further forensic findings, one haunting question remains unanswered: what happened inside the darkness of Shark Cave that prevented five experienced divers from ever finding their way back to the surface?
