Gino D’Acampo Grants Terminally Ill Girl’s Final Wish — And Honors Her Memory with a Foundation in Her Name

At just 17, Amelia Hughes had one wish — to meet the chef whose laughter and recipes helped her through the darkest days of battling esophageal cancer. And in a moment that felt pulled from the pages of a fairytale, that wish came true.

Gino D’Acampo, the beloved Italian TV chef known for his passionate love of food and infectious personality, appeared at Amelia’s hospital bedside in Surrey last week. Not only did he come with a tray of freshly made cannelloni — her favorite — he leaned in gently and said, “Hello, little warrior,” before wrapping her in the warmest embrace.

For Amelia, who had been in and out of the hospital for over a year, the surprise was overwhelming. “She just kept whispering, ‘Is it really him?’” recalled her nurse, Helen Radcliffe, who helped coordinate the visit.

Amelia’s mother, Claire, shared how her daughter had clung to Gino’s videos like lifelines. “Even when she couldn’t eat, his energy and joy gave her hope. It was like having a friend in the room.”

The visit wasn’t brief or performative. Gino stayed for over an hour, laughing with Amelia, asking about her dreams, and listening to her stories. He brought with him a chef’s jacket embroidered with her name in gold, along with a handwritten note that read:

“Dear Amelia,
Cooking is about love, passion, and strength — just like you.
You are a true inspiration. Never stop dreaming.
With all my heart,
Gino.”

Tears streamed down Amelia’s face as she hugged the jacket close. “This means everything to me,” she whispered.

Quietly, without fanfare, he made donations to help fund ongoing treatment and support for other children like Amelia. Through the same hospital network, several young patients have since received additional care and opportunities they couldn’t otherwise afford — thanks in part to the chef’s generosity.

“He didn’t want the attention on that,” said one staff member. “He just asked, ‘What more can I do?’”

The moment — captured in a single photo of Gino and Amelia smiling side by side — quickly spread across social media, drawing messages of admiration from around the world.

One commenter wrote: “This isn’t just about a celebrity making time. It’s about a man with a huge heart changing lives.” Another added: “Gino, you didn’t just feed her — you fed her soul.”

For Amelia, the impact was transformative. “She told me she feels seen, valued — like she made a difference in someone else’s life,” Claire said.

Gino later posted the photo with a simple caption:

“Met a real-life superhero today. Amelia — your courage is my favorite recipe.”

And in a world often too busy to pause, one little warrior’s dream reminded us all: kindness can be healing, and even the smallest acts of love can change everything.
