It has been claimed that former Prime Minister David Cameron had to sack Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor from his role as an ambassador for British trade.

The claim has been made in a new book by royal author Robert Hardman about Queen Elizabeth II titled Elizabeth II: In Private, In Public – The Inside Story.

During one chapter, Robert assesses the four-year period between 2012 and 2016 and how the then Prime Minister had to gently tell the monarch that her second eldest son had to stand down due to revelations about his relationship with the now-dead convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

Lord Cameron said in the book: “I think I was responsible for gently saying to Her Majesty that he had to stand down as a trade envoy. It was all pretty much fixed.

“But I was just to reference it for the official log. The Queen was worried about him but she could see the logic.”

Lord Cameron also noted that it wasn’t just Andrew’s relationship with Epstein that was causing problems, but also comments that the now-former Duke of York had been making.

He added: “It had been getting embarrassing. Andrew kept turning up to things and making terrible remarks. I’d seen it myself at Davos where he was going to his receptions and was just a bit crass. He had his way of doing things and it wasn’t what you wanted.

“He was very good with all the tyrants but he started being opinionated saying we were too squeamish about dealing with these people. His speeches would always just have three or four inappropriate things.”

The revelation in Mr Hardman’s book about Andrew’s period as the UK’s special representative for international trade and investment comes weeks after renewed scrutiny surrounding his past public role and associations.

Andrew later spent 11 hours in discussions with advisers as officials reviewed matters linked to his time in public duties. He denies any wrongdoing in relation to Jeffrey Epstein.

Andrew’s move to Wood Farm on the Sandringham Estate comes after he was moved from the 30-room mansion Royal Lodge, where he had lived for around 20 years.

He is set to move later to Marsh Farm, which sits on a different part of the Sandringham Estate, after its renovation is complete.

Speaking about the current state of Andrew’s future home to The Sun, fellow royal author Robert Jobson said: “It’s been wrecked. I mean, the poor place looked quite nice before. Now with this lump of this sort of Peaky Blinders caravan on the side of it, it’s just dreadful.”

“This was quite a nice sort of country home. It’s just awful now. You know, the way it’s been, you know, I don’t know. I think that when he eventually, if he ever moves in, I mean, you know, it just seems crazy to me what’s been going on.”
